Mt Rainier National Park has 4 distinct entrances depending on which direction you’re coming from:



  • Northwest: Carbon River
  • Northeast: White River/Sunrise
  • Southeast: Steven’s Canyon
  • Southwest: Nisqually


As you drive closer to the Mountain, you’ll pass through Elbe and then Ashford. From Ashford, the Nisqually Entrance in the Southwest corner is less than a 10-minute drive. Here are a few of the top hikes (listed in order of difficulty) you can begin from this entrance:

Trail of Shadows

Considered one of the best introductions to Mt. Rainier and hiking in general, the Trail of Shadows offers an easy-loop experience with level terrain and tranquil scenery. 

Distance: 0.7 Miles

Difficulty: Easy

Directions: From the Nisqually Entrance, drive 6.5 miles to Longmire. The trailhead is located across the main road from the National Park Inn in Longmire.


Twin Firs Loop

A perfect family-friendly hike named after the scenic Fir trees and beautiful covered spots underneath old growth. 

Distance: 0.4 Mile Loop

Difficulty: Moderate

Directions: From the Nisqually entrance, head past the Kautz Creek trailhead and facilities to the Twin Firs Trailhead, on the left side of the road. There is a sign for this trail so keep your eyes peeled.


Rampart Ridge Loop

The Rampart Ridge Loop connects to the Trail of Shadows and passes through towering forests with stunning glimpses of the surrounding mountain vistas.

Distance: 4.7 Miles

Difficulty: Moderate

Directions: From the Nisqually Entrance, drive 6.5 miles to Longmire. The trail begins at the west end of the Trail of the Shadows, approximately 0.2 miles from the trailhead if heading clockwise.
